Turkish Prep School (TÖMER)

Planning to study in Turkish but not fluent yet? Nişantaşı TÖMER teaches you Turkish from your first words up to university level, so you can start your degree with confidence.

Who is it for?

Do I need Turkish prep?

Turkish-taught programs ask for proof of your Turkish level at registration. If you can't show it yet, TÖMER gets you there.

You can skip prep if you…

  • pass the NTDİL exam with the score your program needs
  • hold an accepted Turkish proficiency certificate (a university TÖMER, Yunus Emre Institute or YTB)
  • finished high school at a Turkish MoNE school abroad

Studying in English instead?

TÖMER is for Turkish-taught programs. For English-taught programs, see our English Prep School.

How it works

From arrival to your first lecture

  1. 1

    Take the free NTDİL exam

At the start of the year, new students take NTDİL — the Nişantaşı TÖMER Language Proficiency and Level Placement Exam. It tests reading, listening, writing and speaking.

  2. 2

Pass and go straight to your program

If you reach the score your program needs, you are exempt from Turkish prep and start your degree right away.

  3. 3

    Or start at your level

Otherwise, your NTDİL score places you in the right class. Nobody starts above their level — every new student is placed by the exam.

  4. 4

    Move up module by module

The year has four modules. Each one ends with a written and speaking exam; you need 60 points to move to the next level.

  5. 5

Retake NTDİL and begin your degree

NTDİL is offered again during and at the end of the year. Once you pass, you continue to your Turkish-taught program.

Good to know

Before you start

Attendance

You must attend at least 80% of the classes in every module.

How you move up

Your end-of-module exam result counts together with class participation, homework and short quizzes.

Repeating a module

If you don't pass a module, you repeat that level. A repeated module is charged again.

Prep doesn't use up your study period

Prep school can last up to two years and is not counted towards the normal duration of your degree.
