About the Faculty
At the Faculty of Dentistry, students graduate by completing a five-year education covering both basic and clinical dental knowledge. The faculty's aim is to train dentists who, adhering to high standards and ethical rules, possess the knowledge and skills to carry out at the highest level all activities required to protect and treat the community's oral and dental health. Covering all practical and theoretical subjects in the field, the program seeks to equip graduates with technical skills and competencies; graduates become fully prepared to diagnose and treat diseases and developmental disorders of the teeth and surrounding tissues.
Courses in the education program are delivered on a semester basis as theory, practice and clinical application, and the language of instruction is Turkish. While the courses in the first and second years provide students with knowledge in the basic medical and dental fields, those in the third, fourth and fifth years are designed to build the knowledge, skills and competencies of the dental profession.
The fourth and fifth years are clinical internship years, and the internship system has been developed on a multidisciplinary basis. Through this system, students take an active role from the first to the final stage of patients' treatments, gaining the experience that the practice of dentistry requires before they graduate.
Career Fields
Working to protect public health, achieve health goals and improve quality of life, dentists are an integral part of the healthcare system; they diagnose and treat oral and dental health problems.
Dentists can be employed in state and university hospitals, private hospitals, dental prosthesis laboratories, private clinics, oral and dental health centers and dental hospitals. They can also work independently by opening their own practices. Dentists who wish to become academics can continue their postgraduate education and work at universities.
About the Courses
With its broad and comprehensive curriculum, the Dentistry undergraduate program aims for students to become dentists equipped with theoretical knowledge, practical skills and professional attitudes. In addition to basic medical education, the program covers the diagnosis and treatment of diseases affecting the mouth and surrounding tissues; priority is given to training individuals who observe ethical rules, follow current scientific developments and embrace service to society as a duty.
In the first two years of professional training, students take pre-clinical professional courses that develop their skills, alongside basic medical and dental courses. So that students can graduate with more hands-on practice, clinical work has been increased from two years to three; entering the clinic from the third year, students gain greater opportunity for clinical practice in dentistry, where practical experience is of great importance. The fourth and fifth years are those in which clinical practice is predominant, alongside dental profession courses and medical courses.
The curriculum includes foundational courses such as Dental Anatomy and Physiology, Anatomy, Dental Anesthesia, Pharmacology and Pathology, as well as professional courses such as Prosthodontics, Restorative Dentistry, Endodontics, Periodontology, Orthodontics, Pediatric Dentistry and Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology/Surgery, with clinical clerkships carried out in these fields. An interdisciplinary education is targeted through various electives, and graduates who successfully complete all courses, including the clinical internship practices in the education plan, are awarded the title of Dentist.
